Paris Square (German, Pariser Platz) is located between the Brandenburg Gate and Unter den Linden Street.
This square has a rectangular shape and has an area of 1.5 ha. It is located opposite the eastern side of the Brandenburg Gate (on the western facade Square on March 18 th), and communicates the street on June 17 in the west, with the Unter den Linden to the east; but since the end of the restoration of the Brandenburg Gate in 2002, the street is closed to traffic and road traffic cutting the communication between the two streets.
From 1945 until German reunification in 1990, the square was in the forbidden zone of the GDR, because a few meters passed west of the border between West Berlin and East Berlin and, since 1961, the Wall.
Paris Plaza was built between 1732 and 1734 under the plans of urban expansion of Frederick William I and surrounded by beautiful baroque palaces. The original name of the square was that of '' Coadrada '' (Viereck or in its French version Quarree), due to its shape.
In 1814 it acquired its present name in memory of the Treaty of Paris, after the capture of Paris by the Prussian troops in the war between France of Napoleon and the Sixth Coalition. From 1850, a remodeling of the square and its buildings began in the classicist style.
