The Water Museum is dedicated to the history of water supply to Lisbon, this small but informative museum was created around the first pumping station.
Maintained by EPAL, the Museu Homenageia Manuel da Maia, the eighteenth-century engineer who designed the Águas Livres Aqueduct. The museum's excellent layout made it win the Council of Europe award in 1990. The place of honor goes to well-preserved steam engines, one of which runs electricity and can be connected to visitors. The development of technology is documented by photographs. Particularly interesting are those dedicated to the Águas Livres Aqueduct and the 17th-century El Rei Fountain in Alfama, where the locals lined up in front of one of six spouts, according to social status.
