Considered by many the ex libris of the city of Porto, this bell tower is part of the church of the same name, built between 1754 and 1763, from a project of Nicolau Nasoni.
It was ordered to erect by D. Jerónimo de Távora Noronha Leme and Sernache, at the request of the Brotherhood of the Poor Clerics. Its architect, Nicolau Nasoni, contributed for many years to the construction of the great tower of the clergics without receiving anything in return and only a few years later this happened.
The tower, although more considered by the inhabitants of Porto, was the last construction of the Clérigos group, of which the church and a ward are part.
It was begun in 1754, taking into account the use of the land that had been left for the installation of the Clerics' ward.
Nasoni's initial project envisaged the construction of two towers, not just one. The tower is decorated according to baroque taste, with sculptures of saints, fogaréus, well-shaped cornices and balustrades.
It is six stories high and 75 meters high, which are climbed by a spiral staircase with 225 steps. It was, at the time of its construction, the tallest building in Portugal.
On the first floor there is a door surmounted by the image of St. Paul, with underneath, inserted in a medallion, a text of St. Paul in the Letter to the Romans. The thickness of the walls of the first floor, in granite, reaches up to two meters. Outstanding windows are the top floor, most compressed and decorated, and the four clock counters.
The materials used in the construction of the Clérigos Tower were mainly granite and marble.
Located on the street of S Filipe de Néri is the most striking representation of the baroque style.
From the top of the Tower can be seen almost all of the city of Porto and the River Douro to Foz.
It is classified by IPPAR as a National Monument since 1910.
